My mother Helen nee Whitaker Drew and her close cousins thought very highly of him, though they never knew him personally they'd obviously had heard really great stories about him. I heard from one of his great-granddaughters Hazel nee Whitaker m/1 a Nicely and 2 a Holt that he could be a real terror when he got drunk. I witnessed his son my maternal grandfather James Herman "Jim Trigg" Whitaker being a holy terror when he'd had too much to drink. My great-aunt Minnie nee VanHook Whitaker told me that her husband Wils Whitaker and all her Whitaker brothers-in-law were all alike when they were young and had had too much to drink. The 19 October 1883 Knoxville Daily Chronicle, Republican Chronicle, and the Memphis Daily Appeal reported Slagel's confession to additional murders. All three mention the death of Mrs. Tinsley and her prematurely born twins. They also reported Slagel's confession to murdering Fred Starkey. "He confesses to the killing of a man with broken accent for the paltry sum of $20, near Williamsburg, KY...and placing the body upon the track to misplace suspicion sometime during the month of last July. This confession throws the first light upon the mysterious murder of Fred Starkey, a Swede of this place, and carpenter by trade whose body was found on the track...completely severed at the abdomen by a passing train. Starkey being a poor man and away from home and friends, no investigation of any note was held beyond the fact that not one drop did the mutilated body bleed, which fact within itself is conclusive evidence that the body was dead long before the cars passed over it. The dead man leaves a wife and eight little children at this place in destitute circumstances." The Daily Appeal article added, "...In explanation of (Slagel's) sudden frights and jumps when standing aside from his cell-mates, he says the face of his Williamsburg victim is continually before him."

Starkey was a Swiss immigrant whose body was discovered outside of Williamsburg on 31 July 1883. The 02 August 1883 Louisville Courier-Journal reported “An accident occurred on the railroad about two miles south of this place last night. A man named Fred Starkey was run over and horribly mangled by the train. Suspicions that the man had been murdered and afterward placed on the track were current to-day, but the Coroner's jury has not sufficient evidence to prove this. The body was terribly mangled."

Fred Starkey is my great-great grandfather.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1415695835195093298.post-63108302491592135262021-09-05T21:44:26.327-04:002021-09-05T21:44:26.327-04:00James Bullock was married to Matilda Parker. From what I can determine, Matilda Parker Bullock was deceased before Feb. 21, 1866 when James sold land without her name or signature. All other land records have both names listed. She was definitely deceased before the 1870 census.

There has been a great deal of speculation regarding "why" this event happened. Some websites/articles mention that James abused Matilda and the kids but that seems untrue, as they had several children and the children were shot at as well. Peter (PH) became an attorney and James was well respected by the community and the courts. He was often sought out by the courts to present information and to act as administrator of wills guardianships.

There was also a story that Joseph Bullock, son of James and Matilda was mentally challenged and the Parkers became upset with him. It is true that Joseph was listed as "insane" in census records and shortly after the shooting, James had Joseph committed to the Western State Lunatic Hospital in Hopkinsville, KY. One record I found indicated that Joseph had been shot during the incident but not fatally. In my opinion, Joseph's illness is not a strong enough case for the cause of the shooting.

In the vain of "follow the money", land feuds seems the most likely reason this happened. Matilda's father, Pleasant, was deceased and James was one of the executors of the will along with Alexander Parker (one of the hanged men and brother of Matilda Parker). There were a LOT of land transactions where James M Bullock purchased many parcels of land belonging to originally to the Parker family. In February 1863, James M. Bullock obtained a license to use PL Parker roadside stand, which probably caused hurt feelings. Peter had also began to purchase Parker lands, one transaction from Joseph parker and another from Margaret Parker.

Other than James having Joseph committed to the institution (which is referenced in the Acts of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Volume 1), there are very few legal records for James Bullock after the shooting. In 1876, he sold 96 acres on Parker Creek but he owned many more acres, for which there are no sales records. On July 6, 1880, he is listed on the Lincoln County Census as a shingle cutter. This the the Last Known Reference that I can find of my grandfather.

Only two of James M Bullock' and Matilda Parker's children had families. I descend through William, who had several children in Pineville, Bell Co, KY. Another son, Pleasant Lewis "Parks" Bullock had three children before he was killed in a tunnel explosion in Morgan Co, KY. They believe that the actual shooter was Andrew Marion (Dude) Phelps, the older brother of James Arthur Phelps. They believe James Arthur is the person who was shot and severely injured during the “shoot out.” James Arthur Phelps’s tombstone cites October 20th 1912 as date of death-the date the article describing the ambush was written. Andrew Marion “Dude” Phelps served a prison sentence, moved out of state, and lived to be an elderly man.

The family is interested in any articles and/or court records regarding any hearings, trial, and sentencing of Andrew Marion Phelps. Especially since you don't know the place/city/county in Kentucky, nor the year. Maybe DNA ancestry research could help? Several of the big ones have connection tools that help you find cousins. Your husband might be able to find some cousins from that particular line of his family tree and be able to figure out who that great-grandfather's ancestors were and from there his former last name. We ...This will sound crazy so please bare with me. We don't know our real last name. See sometime around the early 1900's my husband's great grandfather supposably killed at least one black man over a poker game in Kentucky, we think. He then moved to West Virginia, moved in with a family and took up the name White which was the name of the family that he moved in with. That's really all we know. The man never even told his new wife and children his real name. My husband's grandfather was told about it after his dad died. We basically don't know anything more. I've been married for over 22 years so i got over the shock long ago. I think what bothers me most is the fact that there was a family out there once and their, husband, father or friend never came home one night because of a stupid game and stupid racism. The poor guy probably never even had a proper death certificate or birth certificate for that matter. Many people didn't back then. The whole situation bothers me. I'd love to be able to learn who this man, maybe even two men were that was killed. I wish i could find his family and apologize. We aren't mean ya know. We're not racist nor would we ever do this.
