Previously:
George. W. "Dud" Whitaker was a cousin of Elisha Whitaker b. 1862, d. 1901. Dud also testified at James Mize's trial because he was across the river at Elisha's house when the shooting happened. This chart from my post on Elisha probably explains their relation best:
Fourteen years later, Dud met a fate similar to his cousin's.

Fatal Quarrel Over Land.
Somerset, Ky., Aug. 14.--Quarreling over a tract of land, the value of which is but a few dollars, Jesse Morgan, fifty-eight years old, last night shot and i[n]stantly killed Dudley Whitaker, thirty-five, at the former's home, east of the city. Neither man had ever before been in trouble and both were highly esteemed as citizens. A Deputy Sheriff brought Morgan to jail here this morning. The killing is the second to occur in Pulaski county within the week. [1]

Quarrel Ends Fatally.
As a result of a quarrel over a small tract of land in Pulaski county, Jesse Morgan shot and killed Dud Whitaker, a neighboring farmer last week. Morgan is 58 years old, while the victim of the deplorable affair is 35. A widow and seven children survive him. The two men had always been the best of friends. Morgan was given an examining trial and remanded to jail to await the action of the September grand jury. [2]
