Swiss Man Killed in Fight at Bernstadt, Laurel, 1889

[April 18, 1889] -

A general fight, participated in by half a dozen Swiss, occurred at Bernstad, the Swiss colony in Laurel County, the other night. Cheese-knives and pistols were freely used. John Christian was so severely stabbed that he died next day. Two others are dangerous hurt. The man inflicting and was pursued as far as Somerset, but succeeded in making his escape. They were all drunk. [1]

[May 3, 1889] -

Arnold Schupock and Jacob Riabea, charged with the murder of John Christian, which occurred at the Swiss colony in Laurel county, April 7, were arrested near Chattanooga, Tenn., and brought to London by Deputy Sheriff C. M. Randall. [2]

[May 21, 1889] -

Harnald Schupback, a Swiss lad about 17 ears old, was indicted for manslaughter. In a drunken row at a dance in the colony, about two months ago, he fatally stabbed one man and seriously wounded two others with a cheese knife. [3]

[May 28, 1889] -

Arnold Schupbach, the Swiss boy who was indicted at this court for manslaughter, was tried Thursday and sentenced to the penitentiary for two years. [4]
